Student and Alumni Engagement Manager

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City is one of the premier science, research and cultural institutions in the country. The American Museum of Natural History is seeking: a Student & Alumni Engagement Manager to support its new, computational science-focused education initiative, BridgeUP: STEM.

BridgeUP: STEM is a five-year pilot program that seeks to bridge the gender and opportunity gaps in the science and technology sectors by providing innovative education programming through five components: Brown Scholars, an immersive education program for high school girls that embeds computer science education in the context of scientific inquiry; Helen Fellows, a nationally-searched one-year fellowship for five post Baccalaureate women to launch their careers in computational science; a middle school partnership program for boys and girls who lack access to computational science education; a professional development program in computational science for New York City science educators; and an annual Museum Hackathon where professional developers address computational challenges in a given scientific discipline.

The position will leverage the findings of BridgeUP’s first four years to generate long-term support for participants’ success in computer and science higher education and careers. The position will create a network of BridgeUP: STEM graduates; support annual cohorts of Brown Scholars for specific college and career prep opportunities; build partnerships for the program among universities and the tech sector; and be part of a team managing Museum’s youth alumni programming across all youth programs. The successful candidate is a highly organized individual, excellent communicator with deep experience in youth development and education programs.

Major responsibilities include:
• In collaboration with the Director of BridgeUP: STEM and other key museum personnel, lead the overall implementation of the new student and alumni engagement component, including the Museum’s Youth Initiatives yearly college and career fair.
• Manage all logistics and administrative tasks related to the implementation of “BridgeUP Bootcamp”, a college prep program for Brown Scholars in their Junior and Senior year of High School that includes customized seminars and workshops to guide them through selecting colleges, completing necessary prerequisites, and preparing and submitting applications and supplemental materials.
• Manage all logistics and administrative tasks related to the implementation of “BridgeUP Internship Toolkit”, a professional development toolkit for Brown Scholars attending a 4-year university or college that includes workshops and other resources on writing resumes, creating project portfolios, and mastering the interview process.
• Work one-on-one with the Brown Scholars providing additional personalized coaching as they navigate the college application process and search for internships.
• Manage the application and selection process for the Magic Grant financial aid program for Brown Scholars in their Senior year of High School who have been accepted at a 4-year university or college and intend to pursue an undergraduate degree in computer science or computational science.
• Manage and engage the alumni community both onsite and online. As part of the community, Brown Scholars will be invited to various onsite events held throughout the year, including an annual summer kick off social event, the annual Hackathon, and the AMNH career fair. The online community will be created and maintained using Slack.
• Coordinate the implementation of the annual kick off social event that will take place each August where alumni will be able to connect in person.
• Ensure the collection of evaluation data regarding student and alumni engagement and create summary reports and statistical and program analyses to inform supervisors and make recommendations to improve overall program performance.
• As needed, provide programmatic support crucial to achieving the mission and goals of all components of BridgeUP: STEM
• Carry out general administrative tasks, including note-taking, memo writing, photocopying, printing, supply inventory, cleaning and tidying of the classroom, etc.

- Undergraduate degree in Psychology, Education, Career Counseling or a relevant field is required. Master’s degree is preferred.
Candidates without a master’s degree must have at least 7 years of work experience as described below.
- Candidates with a Masters degree must have at least 5 years of experience in Youth Education, specifically providing support or managing programs for scholarships, fellowships, internships, outreach, mentoring, or similar programs designed to meet the financial and/or development needs of high school and/or undergraduate students.
- Experience identifying and partnering with diverse stakeholders such as universities and tech companies.
- Experience organizing and coordinating program events such as career fairs and networking and social events.
- Experience providing individual and group career development counseling to high school and/or college students.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
